Our annual Stuff the Bus School Supply Drive is in full swing and school supplies are starting to trickle into our United Way office. In our latest e-newsletter I wrote about how having the necessary school supplies makes a difference for students and lessens the financial strain for families.
Many of you have made monetary donations, dropped off school supplies and shipped them right to our office. It may not seem like much, but each backpack, binder, and pen purchased helps ensure students can have a bright educational future. Your donation has the power to create a ripple effect and inspires others to donate too.
At our Stuff the Bus School Supply Drive kickoff last week we saw how our community’s generosity impacted a very young donor. This little boy was attending the Red Wing Aces game with his family and watched as people dropped off school supplies and gave donations. At our booth we had a backpack display of what $20.00 would buy. After some time, the little boy approached our booth with a $20.00 bill. He simply wanted to donate so someone could be prepared for school. Even at his young age, he knew he could make an impact.
I understand the financial deck can be stacked up against us at any time. The cost of food, housing and gas has significantly gone up. But if you can give, please consider it and know that your donation will impact a child. There are families in our communities that are doing their best to make their dollars stretch, and they are thankful for our support.
Last school year we distributed three hundred backpacks, this year let’s aim to surpass our 2022’s efforts and see how impactful we can be.
In gratitude,
-Nicolle Mechelke
